Project III The Game
Games are not simply entertainment.
One of the earliest games in China was Liubo, or the six-throwing-chopstick board game set. It was first generated by Shang people as a tool for divination and then become a very popular game during Spring and Autumn to Han Dynasty. A pair of immortals in front of a chessboard playing Liubo was very commonly found in the tombs of Han Dynasty, either as images on portrait bricks, or as miniature puppets, as a channel towards the immortal land and a metaphor that the tomb owner will become immortals. In the famous story of Wang Zhi, who watched immortals playing chess for a short period of time in the mountain, while actually took over a hundred years in the human world. Even the axe he had brought with him rotted.
Wei-qi, another ancient game that is still popular today, were also thought to connect the earth and the universe. The chessboard was believed to present the earth while the black and white pieces to present the operation of stars. The process of game playing indicate how Yin and Yang interact and it served as a prediction to the human world.
For ancient people, games were connections between immortals and the human world. Just like Taoism imagoes of pot, gourd and Grotto-heaven, games were special passage to let people to travel across space and time and reach the mysterious fairyland.
Through the practice of games, people were allowed to dissociate from the present world for a short while. The game was like a miniature of the operation of the universe. A player was able to watch and operate from a higher dimension, as if being a deity.
In the work Klotski, I used the template of a modern board game while replacing each chess piece by elements from different ideologies. The pieces are flexible in the game, which indicate relationship-building and breaking. The status depicted in the work is instantaneous, just like each of the potential status indicated in the left part of the work, the solution. With no established rules or goals, the solution itself becomes meaningless. I wish the game to be a passage towards a contemporary Dao, just like the Chinese name of the game “Hua Rong Dao“ has implied.
